Prophesying
1 Chronicles Chapters 25 – 27
While most of what we’ve read so far about worship has been about making sacrifices and making music, chapter 25 introduces what could be a reference to something like preaching, though probably very different than our modern conception of it.
First, we remember that prophecy is more about telling God’s truth than it is about foretelling the future, so the terminology doesn’t necessarily suggest a big difference, but the context does.
The first verse of Chapter 25 says, “David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals.”
Both the connection to the army and the musical accompaniment suggest something pretty different than what we think of as preaching. Even in modern military chaplaincy the chaplains are not too closely connected to the chain of command.
Once again, though, we are reminded of the importance of music in worship (and apparently in the army). It is not an add-on, but central to worship.

Wednesday meditation

Proverbs 27:5-6
Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.

Prayer focus
Lord, give us wise men and women to lead in your worship, both in music and in truth-telling.
