Right defense
Day 320, Friday, June 27
Isaiah Chapters 21 – 22
Among the prophecies in today’s readings is one about Jerusalem.
Isaiah cautions the people that they misunderstand the threat they face: they believe themselves to be threatened by the enemies that surround them and fail to recognize that the real threat is their disobedience to God. Because of their mistaken belief they think protection will come from physical preparations for a coming attack.
“You counted the buildings in Jerusalem and tore down houses to strengthen the wall. You built a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the Old Pool, but you did not look to the One who made it, or have regard for the One who planned it long ago.”
They prepare for a seige by an outside enemy by reinforcing the walls and storing up water, but don’t turn to the God who is their real protection.
Friday meditation
Proverbs 31:24-26
She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
Prayer focus
Lord remind us always that you are our strength and protection. Things will let us down and fail to protect, but you will be faithful to protect those who are faithful to you.
