Redeemer
Day 386, Monday, Sept. 1
Jeremiah 50:29 – 51:23
Statements of God’s wrath against Babylon continue as well as promise to free God’s people from captivity.
Chapter 50 speaks of the oppression of Israel and Judah and the stubbornness of their captors.
Then in verse 34 we read, “Yet their redeemer is strong; the Lord Almighty is his name. He will vigorously defend their cause so that he may bring rest to their land but unrest to those who live in Babylon.”
The word “redeemer” is an important one and is a word later applied to Jesus.
The image is of a person (or in this case, a nation) who has been kidnapped and held for ransom. The redeemer is the one who pays the ransom to secure freedom.

Monday meditation
Job 29:18-25
“I thought, ‘I will die in my own house, my days as numerous as the grains of sand. My roots will reach to the water, and the dew will lie all night on my branches. My glory will not fade; the bow will be ever new in my hand.’
“People listened to me expectantly, waiting in silence for my counsel. After I had spoken, they spoke no more; my words fell gently on their ears. They waited for me as for showers and drank in my words as the spring rain. When I smiled at them, they scarcely believed it; the light of my face was precious to them. I chose the way for them and sat as their chief; I dwelt as a king among his troops; I was like one who comforts mourners.
Prayer focus
I know that my redeemer lives and has bought my freedom for a steep price.
