Day 639, Tuesday, May 12
1 Thessalonians Chapter 1 – 2:16
The beginning of 1 Thessalonians has similarities to the end of Colossians in that it highlights the way the example of Paul and his co-workers influenced the Thessalonians and the way that their example now influences others in discipleship. We are again reminded that our actions in living out the Christian faith influence others.
Verse 1:3 provides an important reminder that our actions are not of our own initiative, but are responses to what God has done. “We remember before our God and father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Earlier when we read 1 Corinthians, the famous Love Chapter (chapter 13) concluded, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Thessalonians 3 brings us back to the same trio and what they lead to: faith produces work, love prompts labor, and hope inspires endurance. Spiritual gifts aren’t a reward for living the Christian life; they are the gifts and empower it.

Today’s reading also included verses that have sometimes been used in problematic ways. Verses 2:14-16 have sometimes been used to justify antisemitism. While Paul does condemn those Jews who are hostile toward Christianity it would make no sense to interpret this as a condemnation of all Jews. Paul himself is Jewish, as are many of the early believers (as well as Jesus and his apostles).

Tuesday meditation

Psalms 119:105-112
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. I have suffered much; preserve my life, Lord, according to your word. Accept, Lord, the willing praise of my mouth, and teach me your laws. Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law. The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts. Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

Prayer focus
Thank you, God, for the people you have placed in our lives who have been beacons and examples. Empower us to be the same for others.
